Some 2,000 monks and lay people left Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda and marched to the city centre on Tuesday, despite warnings military action might be taken against protesters, witnesses said.

The monks were carrying flags, including some bearing the image of a fighting peacock used by students in a 1988 pro-democracy uprising the generals crushed with the loss of an estimated 3,000 lives.
