A German intelligence officer, Wilm Hosenfeld, saved a Jew, Wladislav Szpilman, from certain death during World War II.
Wilm Hosenfeld has become the first Nazi officer who has received the highest Jewish decoration, international media reported.
The Former Nazi officer got the title “Righteous among the Nations” which only those who saved Jews and other victims of the Holocaust even if it could have cost them their own lives.
The German intelligence officer found pianist Wladislav Szpilman and saved him from certain death. But Hosenfeld was arrested by the Russians who sentenced him to 25 years of hard labour and put him in a labour camp.
Wilm Hosenfeld died in 1952 and even Wladislav Szpilman’s son’s attempts to get him out of the camp failed. Director Roman Polanski made a film about Wladislav Szpilman called “The Pianist”.
