New Serbian Government Will Have 25 Members

Text

The Serbian National Assembly created the formal conditions to establish the new government almost four months after the elections.

The Serbia National Assembly passed the law on ministries and thus created the formal and legal conditions to fulfill the constitutional regulation that states that the government has to be formed no later than 90 days after the parliament is constituted and the deadline expires at midnight on Tuesday, since the National Assembly of Serbia was constituted on February 15.

The government will have 22 ministries, including three new ones – defense, foreign affairs and the ministry for Kosovo and Metohija. The law on ministries that was in effect until now did not include the defense and foreign ministries, so that, after the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro had fallen apart, Serbia inherited the ministers of defense and foreign affairs who, however, did not have the right to vote at government sessions.

The new law has also introduced the office of minister without portfolio, who will be in charge of implementing the national investment plan.

The government will have one vice-president who will be in charge of European integration.

Including the prime minister and vice-president, the government will have 25 members: 13 from the Democratic Party (vice-president, 11 ministers and minister without portfolio), eight from the coalition Democratic Party of Serbia – New Serbia (seven ministers and the prime minister) and four ministers from the party G17 PLUS.
