The Catholic Church was against the abortion, however, doctors claim that her body would not withstand childbirth.
A nine year old Brazilian girl has had an abortion, despite opposition from the Catholic Church, reports the Australian News. The girl was carrying twins, and she got pregnant from her stepfather who was raping her. The abuser has been in custody since last week, reports the police.
According to the media reports, the 23 year old stepfather has been abusing the girl since she was 6 years old, and paid her for every sexual act.
Abortion is illegal in Brazil, besides in certain occasions where the life of the mother is in danger or the fetus does not have a chance of survival.
Fatima Maia, the director of the hospital where the girl had the abortion, says that the life of the girl, who weighs only 36 kilograms, was in danger.
“She is very small” said Fatima Maia.
However, there are those who consider that the girl should not have had an abortion.
