Pakistan on Tuesday designated the former head of its main spy agency as the successor to President Pervez Musharraf.
"Lieutenant-General Ashfaq Pervez Kiani has been appointed vice chief of the army staff," a military official told Reuters.
"General Kiani will take over as chief of the army staff after this post falls vacant."
Kiani had been Director-General of the Inter Services Intelligence agency until last month. Musharraf is expected to win a presidential election on Saturday.
