Pakistan on Tuesday designated the former head of its main spy agency as the successor to President Pervez Musharraf.

Pakistan on Tuesday designated the former head of its main spy agency as the successor to President Pervez Musharraf after he quits as army chief, which he has vowed to do after winning a new term, the military said.

"Lieutenant-General Ashfaq Pervez Kiani has been appointed vice chief of the army staff," a military official told Reuters.

"General Kiani will take over as chief of the army staff after this post falls vacant."

Kiani had been Director-General of the Inter Services Intelligence agency until last month. Musharraf is expected to win a presidential election on Saturday.
