Brazilian Indians protested on Tuesday over the deforestation of the Amazon, which coincided with the 2009 World Social Forum in the city of Belem near the Amazon River.
The main factor that causes deforestation is clearing forest surfaces to breed cattle. Cattle breeding is a highly lucrative industry in this area, which does not require high maintenance costs and yields good profit.
The forests are thus replaced with grass areas and savannahs, intended for the cattle. Furthermore, Soy is grown in the areas where forests used to be situated. The process of illegal cutting down trees is widespread also due to high prices of wood.
