As the plane above the Scottish city was bombed, 243 passengers and 16 crew members were killed, 180 of whom were Americans.
Exactly 20 years ago, a Pan Am 103 aeroplane was bombed above Scottish city Lockerbie. The tragedy was the end of 243 passengers and 16 crew members.
Furthermore, 11 Lockerbie locals died. Even 180 passengers were American and the bombing incident was considered one of the greatest terrorist acts directed against the American people, until September 11, 2001.
During a 3-year investigation, 15.000 persons were questioned and charges against Libyan intelligence agents Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi and Lamin Khalifah Fhimah, Libyan Arab Airlines manager in Malta, were raised in 1991.
During their trial in 2001, none of the defendants wished to testify and Megrahi was sentenced to 27 years in prison over homicide charges.
