Police: Suspect tried to swim away
Stuart police said officers chased David Dwyer, 44, after he allegedly was seen attempting to break into a home shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday. The suspect jumped into Poppleton Creek and headed toward the St. Lucie River, TCPalm.com reported Friday.
Police said a witness offered to take officers out on his boat and Dwyer refused repeated demands for him to give up and climb aboard the craft.
Officers said Dwyer attempted to climb out of the creek at one point, but jumped back into the water when he was confronted by police.
Dwyer eventually became tired and surrendered, police said. He was charged with attempted burglary, loitering and prowling, and resisting arrest without violence.
