Russia investigates deaths of 8 newborns

Text

NALCHIK, Russia, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Russian authorities said charges of criminal negligence may be filed in the deaths of eight newborn babies at a hospital in North Caucasus.

The babies died in the first 10 days of January at the regional children's hospital in the city of Nalchik, Kabardino-Balkaria, the Russian Investigative Committee said Saturday.

Parents of the babies said an electricity shortage could have caused deaths because seven of the babies were on medical ventilators, RIA Novosti reported.

Investigators were looking into the legality of cutting off electricity to the hospital, the Russian news agency said.

Kabardino-Balkaria Health Minister Fatimat Amshokova was temporarily suspended Saturday by the president of the republic.
