According to television projections Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy won France's presidential election with a score of 53.0 percent.

Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy won France's presidential election on Sunday, defeating Socialist Segolene Royal by a comfortable margin, according to television projections released after polling stations closed.

The forecasts by four pollsters gave Sarkozy a score of between 53.0 to 53.2 percent, and Royal on between 46.8 to 47.0 percent. Full official results were expected shortly after midnight.
