At best, if Montenegro recognises Kosovo, Serbia will break off relations. At worst, it will sue Montenegro. The question is: To whom?
Will Kosovo threaten relations between Serbia and Montenegro? It will be revealed as Montenegro recognises independent Kosovo, which Serbian heads call highly unwelcome.
Vuk Jeremic, Serbian Foreign Affairs Minister, believes that such a move would be “a knife in the back for Serbia”, while former prime minister and leader of the Democratic Party of Serbia Vojislav Kostunica says the Montenegro should be sued if it recognises Kosovo. It is not clear whom should they sue Montenegro before?
Still, a more moderate current advocated just certain relations with Montenegro to be broken off, but the end of all inter-state ties would not be the issue.
However, nobody sees this as a positive move, thus Velimir Ilic, head of New Serbia pointed out for the Kurir paper that recognising Kosovo would be a “big stain” in the relations between the two countries and “a wound which will never heal”.
On the other hand, he said that relations should not be destroyed over some 200,000 Serbs who live in Montenegro.
Leading Serbs believe that the protection of their fellow citizens is in question, who will be threatened by the Montenegrin separatist regime and such recognition would not be in the interest of neither states.
