Settlements reached in phone hacking case

LONDON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Britain's high court learned details Thursday of the damage settlements reached by 19 celebrities and politicians in the country's phone-hacking scandal.

The court was told actor Jude Law received $200,000 while his girlfriend Sadie Frost settled her damage claim against the publisher of the now-defunct News of the World for $77,000, the BBC reported.

Law's phone was repeatedly hacked from 2003 to 2006.

Others whose settlements were detailed before the high court included former cavalry officer James Hewitt, who had an affair with the late Princess Diana, and Members of Parliament George Galloway and Chris Bryant.

Lawyers told the court most of the people pursuing damages in the case have settled.

Mark Thomson of the law firm Atkins Thomson told The Guardian some claimants would press ahead for a trial scheduled for next month.

"All of the claimants have been extremely brave to take on and succeed against a massive and influential multinational media organization," Thomson said.
