DIPLOMAT IN TROUBLE
JULY 12 2008 17:47h
In Brazil and Congo it is acceptable to have sex with underage, so the American diplomat could get a milder sentence.
Gons G. Nachman (42) in April was accused of child pornography possession, and he confessed he had sexual relations with girls between 14 and 17 years of age, American media report.
Mr Nachman was in charge of diplomatic relations in Brazil and Congo where he committed the mentioned crimes. However, he stated that, due to cultural differences, these countries allow sex wit underage, and the judge agreed that the decision on diplomatic justice will be pronounced in August.
Attorney Stephen Stine said that the psychological profile of his client could prove that cultural difference made Nachman believe that sex with a underage girls is acceptable and normal. This should have influence in the court’s final verdict, the lawyer thinks.
However, the prosecutor thinks that the diplomat’s victims have the right to be protected, despite they were not born in America.
The maximum punishment Nachman could get for sexual abusing of an underage is 20 years in prison.
- In Congo, women develop quickly, both physically and emotionally, due to the substantial responsibility society places on them from early childhood. Their main concern is marrying young girls to men with financial stability – Nachman wrote in detention.
Nachman studied at the Pennsylvania University, and was already known as leader of protesters in favour of nudism.
Presently he is engaged to 21-year-old Brazilian girl, and he wants the wedding ceremony to be held before the sentence is pronounced.
