Support Falls For UK`s Labour In Another Poll

Text

The poll gives support for Brown`s Labour Party at 28 percent, down two percentage points on last month.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's ruling Labour Party has fallen 20 points behind the opposition Conservatives, a poll showed on Tuesday, in a new blow to the leader as he tackles a deepening recession.

Nearly two-thirds of those polled by Ipsos MORI said they were not satisfied with the way Brown was doing his job, while 70 percent were dissatisfied with the government as a whole.

The poll gives support for Brown's Labour Party at 28 percent, down two percentage points on last month, with the Conservatives up four points at 48 percent.

Brown enjoyed a revival in the polls last year following his initial measures to boost the economy during the downturn.

But his political fortunes have worsened with rising unemployment and growing concerns about his ability to deal with Britain's worst recession in decades. Brown has faced public anger and media criticism over bonus payments for staff of banks bailed out by taxpayers' money.

Six out of 10 of those polled by Ipsos MORI said they feared the economy will worsen in the next 12 months. Only 20 percent thought it would improve.

The next parliamentary and local elections in Britain are due by mid-2010.

Conservative leader David Cameron, who has repeatedly criticised Brown's response to the financial crisis, saw his approval ratings rise three points compared to last month. Forty-three percent of the respondents said they were satisfied with his performance compared with 34 percent who were dissatisfied.
