Ten members of Kosovo’s police (KPS) and five members of the Serbian Army reserves were injured on Monday near Mutivoda, on the border between Serbia and Kosovo during a protest against the declaration of independence of Kosovo, Serbian media report.
The accident was caused when a gathering of about 150 members of the Serbian Army reserves threw stones, engine oil and water at some members of Kosovo’s police. The latter were forced to use tear-gas. According to Serbian sources, the KPS and Kosovo’s gendarmerie used tear-gas repeatedly, attempting to disperse the protesters.
The KPS spokesman, Veton Ehslanij, stated that 9 members of the special formation of the KPS and one of the reserve formation were injured.
Agency Beta stated the protesters, apart from throwing stones against the police, shouted slogans against Kosovo’s independence and insults against Albanians, calling the journalists of Belgrade’s media – Blic daily and agencies Beta and RTV B92 – traitors.
According to Serbian media, about 250 people took part in the protest near Mutivoda, mainly war veterans from southern Serbia, from Medvedja, Kuršumlija, Leban and Leskovac, as well as from parts of Kosovo.
Mitrovica: Serbian students continued the protest
Serbian students from the university in northern Mitrovica continued the protest on Monday in the city and repeated that they do not recognise the declaration of independence of Kosovo.
The protest was carried out peacefully without any accident, and after passing the streets in the northern part of the city, the students ended the protest near the bridge that separates the Serbian and the Albanian parts of the city.
The students held Serbian flags and signs with ‘Kosovo is Serbia’ written on them, and set fire to a photo of American State Secretary, Condoleeza Rice.
The students announced that the protest will continue on Tuesday.
