They Said Sanader Caused My Detention

Text

Dragan Covic told OBN TV that many people tried to convince him Croatia’s Premier Sanader was to blame for his custody.

Dragan Covic, the president of the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia-Herzegovina (HDZ BiH), told Bosnia’s OBN television last night that many people had tried to convince him that Croatian Prime Minister and president of the Croatian HDZ party, Ivo Sanader, was to blame for his month-long imprisonment after being sentenced by the BH Court to five years in prison, the 24sata.info portal reports Friday.

Asked whether it was true that Sanader was involved in his imprisonment Covic said:

‘Many tried to convince me to that effect, but I don’t believe so… I don’t think that man could have or was allowed to do that.’

Commenting on Sanader’s recent call to unite the two HDZ’s active in Bosnia (HDZ BH and HDZ 1990), Covic said that at the current political moment this was not possible. As far as he is concerned, everyone can join the party in line with procedure, if they obeyed the party’s Statute.

Dragan Covic had been sentenced to five years in prison for embezzling several million convertible marks during his office as federal finance minister. He has been released from detention on his own recognisance.
