Think tank rips Ghanaian energy policy

ACCRA, Ghana, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Ghana's Danquah Institute alleges that governmental political indecision has resulted in delaying the growth of the country's gas infrastructure.

Danquah Institute Executive Director Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko said the delay over the past three years in developing Ghana's natural gas infrastructure is primarily due to the worsening political infighting among the power blocs in the country's ruling National Democratic Congress Party.

As for what the delays in developing the country's natural gas infrastructure cost the country in lost revenue Otchere-Darko observed, "Based on what we see on the world market today, our 240 million cubic feet per day of gas could result in some $438 million annually from the lean gas for power generation and over $200 million annually from the associated liquids, such as liquefied petroleum gas," The Ghanaian Chronicle reported Friday.

The Danquah Institute is one of Ghana's leading media, research and policy analysis centers.
