Third Post-Mortem For London G20 Demo Victim

Text

An initial post-mortem found that Tomlinson had died from a heart attack.

A third post-mortem examination is to be conducted on the body of a man who collapsed and died during protests at the G20 summit in London, the City of London coroner said on Tuesday.

Newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson, 47, died after being caught up in a demonstration on April 1 outside the Bank of England in London's financial district. He was on his way home and was not taking part in the protest.

The coroner's office said the fresh post-mortem would be carried out on Wednesday after a request from lawyers representing a police officer.

An initial post-mortem found that Tomlinson had died from a heart attack.

But a second post-mortem -- ordered after video footage emerged of a police officer apparently pushing him to the ground -- found he had died from internal bleeding.

After that finding the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it had interviewed a Metropolitan Police officer under caution for manslaughter.

A police pathologist will also attend the post-mortem as an observer at the request of Scotland Yard, the coroner's office said.

The IPCC is investigating two other cases of alleged police violence at the G20 protests, including one against a woman who said she was struck by an officer.

The police watchdog has already received 185 complaints of which more than 50 were from people who allege they were assaulted by police or witnessed an assault.

London police Commissioner Paul Stephenson has asked the inspector of constabulary to conduct a review of police public order tactics in the light of the criticism.
