The Titanic sailed out of the Southampton Harbour on April 10, 1912. She sank on April 15 with 1,517 souls.
On this day in history, April 10, 1912, the unsinkable RMS Titanic headed out for its maiden voyage, which was also its last.
The New York-bound Titanic sailed out with 2,240 passengers early in the afternoon from the Southampton Harbour.
On April 14, 1012, the Titanic crashed into an iceberg which tore its right starboard side. In the early hours of April 15, only two hours and 40 minutes after the impact, the ship was on the bottom of the ocean. That night, 1,517 people lost their lives, which is the greatest peacetime maritime accident in history.
The cause of many deaths was the fact that ship constructors were so convinced that the Titanic could not be sunk by anything which left the passengers with an insufficient amount of lifeboats.
The accident powerfully resounded throughout the world, while many films were shot based on these events.
The exact location of the ship was not familiar for a long time, but a team of US and French explorers and scientists successfully located the Titanic`s wreck on September 1, 1985.
