Tony Blair is the official candidate for the first permanent EU president post. His dark past has gotten in the way of his light future.
Former British PM Tony Blair is now an official candidate for the president of the European Council post, Baroness Kinnock told reporters, BBC writes. She added that the United Kingdom supports Blair in his candidacy for one of the most powerful positions in the European Union.
- People know who he is, and he could step into this new role with a lot of respect and he would be generally welcomed – Baroness Kinnock said.
The European Council will finally be legally acknowledged as one of the bodies in the institutionalised structure of the EU as the Lisbon Treaty takes effect.
So far, the president`s function has been performed by the president of the presiding country. However, with the Lisbon Treaty taking effect, rotating presidency will be replaced with the function of EU president, who will hold a two and a half year term.
However, Blair cannot be hopeful of the EU presidential post until Ireland ratified the Lisbon Treaty at a referendum. In addition, although the former PM has the support of the British cabinet, as Baroness Kinnock said, and everyone knows who he is, clearly, he is not the people`s favourite person.
Instant petition
An online petition has already appeared called “Stop Blair”, which explains which authorities would be appointed to the EU president and why Blair should not perform such duties.
The president will be making important political decisions and be responsible for the relations of the European Union and the rest of the world. Blair`s opponents point out that he has taken his country to wage a war in Iraq by manipulating information.
The media published a document last month which dates back to January 31, 2003, nearly two months before the invasion on Iraq. The file confirms that Blair and Bush were aware Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction.
Furthermore, British scientist dr. David Kelly was planning to publish his research in 2003, based on evidence that Iraq did not posses with weapons of mass destruction, which started the invasion. He was planning to publish the information that he warned PM at the time, Tony Blair, that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Kelly was found dead before publishing the information and the authorities reported he had committed suicide.
