Text
The UN resolution expressed Assembly’s concern over persistent, severe and systemic violations of civil and political rights in North Korea.
Commission of the UN’s General Assembly used a non-binding resolution to express a deep concern over the state of human rights in North Korea.
The resolution expresses Assembly’s concern over persistent, severe and systemic violations of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights in the People's Republic of Korea.
General Assembly’s Resolution on Human Rights was adopted by 96 votes. It still needs to get approval of the 192 member states of the UN.
Last year a similar resolution was adopted with 95 votes.
The resolution chronicles a long list of violations in North Korea, including torture, inhuman conditions of detention, public executions, arbitrary detention, lack of juridical process and rule of law.
Violations include the death penalty for political and religious reasons.
North Korean mission to the UN, led by Pak Tok-hun, has categorically rejected a resolution and they describe it as “a political conspiracy of hostile, US led forces, that aim to discredit the North Korean political system”.
