After the 1976 exorcism, 24-year-old Anneliese Michael died. She was allegedly possessed with the devil himself.

Anneliese Michael, born in 1952, is a German Catholic girl who was said to have been possessed with demons and underwent an exorcism. She died in 1974 at the age of 24 from direct and derisive consequences of exorcism.

Two films were based on Anneliese`s story – “Emily Rose Exorcism” and “Requiem”. Signs of possession first appeared in the girl`s behaviour at 16 when she started shaking and losing control of her body. At first, doctors diagnosed her with epilepsy, while a severe psychic disorder was also assumed. After a while, Anneliese was admitted for treatment, but her condition only deteriorated.

Demons did not allow her to eat

Anneliese`s possession could not be controlled. She started hitting, insulting and biting her family members, she refused to eat because the demons did not allow it; she slept on a stone floor, ate spiders, flies and coal. She drank her urine on several occasions.

Soon, Anneliese started seeing demonic visions during her daily prayers, followed by voices, telling her she would be “cooking is hell”.

Possessed, she ate spiders and flies; drank her urine

After a few years of continuous deterioration, local ministers started observing her, while pastor Ernst Alt finally filed a request for exorcism in 1974 when Anneliese turned 22. The request was turned down and the clergy advised the girl to start living a more religious life, after which the fits would go away.

However, Anneliese`s possession could not be controlled. She started hitting, insulting and biting her family members, she refused to eat because the demons did not allow it; she slept on a stone floor, ate spiders, flies and coal. She drank her urine on several occasions.

The 22-year-old screamed and yelled for hours, supposedly breaking crucifixes in her family home, destroying religious icons and rosemaries.

Her possession interested a bishop in Wurzburg, Josef Stangl, who ordered two priests o perform exorcism – Arnold Renz and Ernst alt. With several other demons, which included Judas Iscariot, Jesus` traitor, mad Roman emperor Nero and Fleischmann, a French priest from the 16 th century, Anneliese`s was supposedly possessed by Lucifer himself.

“Beg for absolution”

On the last day of the exorcism, June 30, 1976, Anneliese has not eaten for weeks and she was suffering from a pneumonia; she had a fever and her knees were crushed because she had to kneel down 600 times on one knee, as part of the exorcism ritual.  In the end, her parents were forced to hold her as she performed these moves.

With several other demons, which included Judas Iscariot, Jesus` traitor, mad Roman emperor Nero and Fleischmann, a French priest from the 16 th century, Anneliese`s was supposedly possessed by Lucifer himself.

The girl`s final words to the exorcists were “Beg for absolution” and she told her mother Anna Michel that she was scared. The next day, her mother reported her dead.

Court proceedings followed, where it was decided that Anneliese`s parents and the two exorcists were guilty of manslaughter. They were all passed six-month prison sentences with parole.

Forensic analysis showed that Anneliese Michel died of starvation.
