`Shots were fired and a hand grenade was thrown at the police station, but no one was injured,` said a police official

Suspected left-wing guerrillas fired shots and threw a hand grenade at a police station in Athens on Tuesday, a month after a shooting that seriously wounded a police officer.

At least three assailants were involved in Tuesday's attack in the western suburb of Korydallos, two using automatic weapons and a third throwing the grenade which failed to explode, police said. No one was injured.

Anti-terrorism police are investigating links to Revolutionary Struggle, Greece's most militant guerrilla group, which claimed responsibility for the shooting of a 21-year-old policeman in January.

"Their tactics are being repeated," Yannis Makris, head of police in Athens, told Net TV.

Police said a phone call was made to Ta Nea newspaper after the attack claiming responsibility on behalf of Revolutionary Struggle, but they could not confirm its validity.

Sixteen 9-mm bullet cases, believed to come from a German-made MP5 submachine gun, were found at the scene and are being tested to see if they match bullets used in previous Revolutionary Struggle attacks.

The group said in a pamphlet that its Jan. 5 shooting of a police officer guarding the Culture Ministry in the central Athens district of Exarchia was in revenge for the police shooting and killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in December, which sparked Greece's worst riots in decades.

A police official, who asked not to be identified, said officers were interviewing witnesses to Tuesday's shooting but so far had not uncovered any evidence about the identity of the assailants.

Police are checking video footage from closed circuit cameras in the area and that may show the attackers on their way to or from the attack, the official said.

After the capture of the Nov. 17 leftist guerrilla group in 2002, Revolutionary Struggle emerged and launched a series of attacks that included a rocket-propelled grenade strike against the U.S. embassy in Athens in January 2007.

In its statement last month, the group also claimed responsibility for a gun attack on a police bus in December and a foiled attempt to bomb the headquarters of oil company Royal Dutch Shell in Athens.
