A plane carrying 169 people on a flight from Germany to Turkey made an emergency landing at Belgrade on Saturday after an engine failure, an aviation official said.

A spokesman for Belgrade airport said a Boeing 737-800 of the German company XL Airways with 163 passengers and six crew on board made an emergency landing at 7:47 a.m. (0547 GMT).

"Passengers were safely evacuated and nobody was injured," he said.

The pilot reported engine failure before entering Serbian airspace and asked for permission to land in Belgrade, the spokesman said.
