The Olympic torch relay stopped for a minute`s silence in China to remember the victims of Monday`s earthquake.

The olympic torch procession comes to a standstill in China - but not due to the pro-Tibet protests that have marred its earlier progress around the world.

Officials and attendees were honouring victims of Monday's powerful earthquake with a minute's silence in eastern Jiangxi province.

The torch received a jubilant welcome in Ruijin, but it was the disaster in Sichuan that was on the minds of the crowds and torch bearers.

"I hope they can rebuild their homes as soon as possible and return to their homes. And I wish they will get better soon and recover from the mental shock," said one of the torch bearers.

China will observe one minute's silence at the start of each day of the Olympic torch relay after the earthquake in southwest China killed tens of thousands

The torch will go through the quake-hit province of Sichuan in mid-June and charity donation boxes for quake victims will be in place along the path of the flame each day.
