Zimbabwe`s MDC Says Official Faces New Charges

Bennett is expected to appear in court on Monday to face the charges, his lawyer, Trust Maanda, told Reuters.

Roy Bennett, a senior official in Zimbabwe's MDC party which has just formed a unity cabinet with President Robert Mugabe, has been charged with planning to commit acts of terrorism and sabotage, his lawyer said on Sunday.

Bennett is expected to appear in court on Monday to face the charges, his lawyer, Trust Maanda, told Reuters.

The case has raised doubts over the credibility of the new government seen as a chance to rescue the ruined country.

The MDC had said earlier that Bennett was charged with treason.

"They have now preferred charges of insurgency or attempting to commit acts of insurgency, terrorism and banditry," Maanda said.

Bennett has denied the charges and believes they are politically motivated, he said.
