"These accusations are false. They wanted to set a trap for me and take my child. This has been happening for a long time now. Earlier my first wife also created several problems to take my child away from me. I do not know who is behind all this."

He's said to have demanded 400,000 dollars for his daughter, according to a British journalist who posed as a potential buyer.

The reporter said Qureshi wanted the money to escape Mumbai's slums. He denies the report.

Rubina also denied the accusations and said her father was telling the truth.

The rags-to-riches romance "Slumdog Millionaire" scooped eight Oscars, including best picture.

But the film has generated controversy in India.

Hundreds took to the streets in protest that the movie's depiction of poverty was insulting.
