Beyonce, Gaga lead MTV awards

The day's top showbiz news and headlines including Beyonce and Lady Gaga lead MTV Video nominations, Cameron Douglas is arrested on drug charges, and Paramount keeps a tight lid on G.I. Joe.

The nominees for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards have been announced, and two pop queens are tied for the most nominations. Beyonce landed nine nominations, including Video of the Year for "Single Ladies." She'll go head-to-head with new contender Lady Gaga, who also earned nine nods, with her song "Poker Face" in the ring for the top prize.

Britney Spears will hope to continue her triple winning streak at last year's event after scoring a total of seven nominations, among the prizes she is up for is Video of the Year for "Womanizer."

Cameron Douglas, the son of Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas, has been arrested on drug charges. The 30-year old was picked up in New York for possession of crystal methamphetamines, apparently with intent to distribute it. Douglas was previously arrested in 2007 for felony possession of a controlled substance.

"G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," a film that could potentially be one the biggest movies of the summer, has been virtually seen by no one. Studio Paramount Pictures is not screening the film for critics, and has only shown the full feature to a few select writers and bloggers - a technique usually reserved for films that studios fear could receive poor advanced reviews. So with a reported production budget of 175 million, will "G.I. Joe" be the sleeper hit of the year, or fall flat as a very costly Hollywood flub? Time will tell soon enough, as "Joe" hits theaters on Friday (August 07).
