George Mitchell, America's new Mideast envoy arrives in Egypt to kick off the Obama administration's efforts to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts and shore up a shaky Gaza truce.

Mitchell is due to meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, at the start of a week-long trip that will also take him to Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, France and Britain.

US President Barack Obama has said the time was ripe to resume Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and that his administration would adopt a more comprehensive approach in its ties with the Muslim world.
