The now traditional "stock exchange carnival" came one day after parts of Germany celebrated Rose Monday, the climax of the carnival season.

The party atmosphere was a welcome distraction from the dire financial situation. Germany's DAX top-30 index opened 0.9 percent lower after Tokyo closed 1.46 percent down, leading Frankfurt traders to predict the crisis was far from over.
