Peru: Smrtonosni izljev rijeke

Rescue workers pull a body from a river bank following a deadly mudslide in Peru.

So far, two people have died and dozens been injured since the mudslide struck in the Peruvian hamlet of Batanchaca.

Authorities declared a state of emergency after smaller mudslides washed out bridges and highways.

It's believed that torrential rain triggered the slide, causing misery for residents.

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED RESIDENT SAYING:

"When the mud fell from above, we became desperate and everything flowed to the river and yes, there are several people who have disappeared. According to the police, they said that there was at least 10 people missing, including one person with their child."

Peru's weather service reported heavy rain was expected for the eastern region of the country for the rest of the week.

In Peru's capital Lima, a central highway was blocked by giant rocks left behind by the mudslide.
